I thought if the coins were declared treasure, they had to be given up to the museum----no choice in the matter--- and they were paid a finders fee?

Depends if a museum wants them. If the museums have other examples of the same coin and don't want to pay the sum the coroner fixed as their value then they return to the finder and landowner. And whilst the coins are nice they don't seem out of the ordinary.

yes  Rob, they would be entitled to the full value which would be shared with them and  the farmer if the Museum wanted to keep them,
 But if they had loads of them or they didn't want to keep them  they would dis-claim them and return them to the finders.  but having both, finds and cash i don't understand unless the reporter got it wrong,  just had another quick lol and it don't say anything about a reward as well ROb
 the museum are proberbly happy they done their bit in recording them.
