I went out for a couple of hours last night and my Minelab Explorer XS worked fine,
When I got home I took the detector apart to clean it, I disconnected the coil from the
control box, cleaned everything and put it back together and charged the battery.
I was just about to go out again, switched the detector on and everything has reset
to zero i.e. volume, contrast, tones etc.etc. I was running the machine on a program
that Geoff kindly installed for me ,now I fear that I've wiped that as well. This is a used
detector that i've only had a few weeks.

Question... Is this something that I've done wrong, or a fault with the detector ?

The machine can only reset if the power button is held in for 5 secs, though a problem that can and does occur to all Minelabs in time is that the bubble switches under the control pad loose there "spring". This can mean that when you switch on the contacts remain together, replicating the 5 second hold for the reset.
The easiest way to see if this is going to keep happening and thus need the need for a new keypad is to turn the machine on and watch the screen, if a factory reset has been performed then you should get a message telling that it's happened. Wink

Hi Geoff, thanks for the reply, yes when I turned it on earlier it said something  like Factory
Reset with some letters and numbers below it. The factory reset has now gone and the program has now gone back to the one originaly installed when I bought the machine,I don't know
what this program is like , but at the moment it seems to be working  Huh Grin
