Author Topic: What is your detecting style, grid the field or wander?  (Read 6341 times)

The field I am on at the moment i have detected on once before, I selected areas and slowly worked my way across the field, in the end after many many hours of detecting I had found 33 hammered coins. On the face of it that sounds pretty damn good., but they were all in appalling condition.
My brother came along with me 3 times, about 9 hours total.
1st time a silver seal matrix
2nd time viccy half sovereign
3rd time stunning penny of Edward IV

Which method would you use ? Gridding or having a wander (he was wandering , I was gridding)

I try & search a field following the stripes pattern on the Union Jack!
If this shows little or no results i move on to the next field/location & will try this on the same field after a week or two.
If however finds start to appear using this method i will search as much of the site as physically possible in the available time.

Out and out wanderer. Haphazard and shockingly uncoordinated detecting. Those that have seen me on a rally probably think I have just wandered into the field accidentally!

Don't be fooled by numbers, it took me weeks over the winter the one year and he comes along in 3 short visits and clears up the best finds, mine were all bent, worn and broken!

Gridding sounds tomuch like a regimental not a relaxed hobby horse.

Its been proved that fifty tectors on a given area will still miss targets, dependant on experience etc.

If you grid a field and decide its tected out, you might be leaving goodies for me to find.

I wonder whether its the same, but when i am out, i rarely find in the first hour because of over concentrating, after relaxing, its usual the finds start coming  Grin

Keep griding you will find the best items,i remember being told many years ago that the best way to detect is either to walk backwards or tie your laces together so you can not take big steps.I tend to grid on a beach but i wonder when on a field.keep going and best of luck.
