There are some great pieces of wisdom on here and very true too. For my ha'peth here goes.
Try to help a complete novice. we were all there once upon a time.
Never assume you have learnt everything about your machine. I constantly try diifferent settings depending of conditions etc and have been surprised by what turns up.
Do not completely trust your machine 'sounds' on the first sweep, or even the second, it can be very misleading and you may miss something worthwhile.
Someone elses settings may not necessarily be best for you if you both have the same machine.
Depth does depend on weather and soil conditions as I have found often.

most machines wont find a hoard as they dont go deep enough ,so we are all walking over 100s and 1000s of deep hoards that are out of reach to the average machine.
occasionally someone gets lucky and does the impossible.
a field that has been done to death may hide a hoard that is out of reach..
I have to disagree mate,as a finder of a few hoards through research....none more 8 inches......why bury that deep if you want to recover them ?..........A SMALL SHALLOW HOLE  WITH A VESSEL THE SIZE OF TEA MUG WAS FOUND BY A MATE,CONTAINING 461 VIKIING /SAXON COINS,INGOTS AND BRACELET

I agree, all machines are capable of finding a hoard. But no machine is capable of finding all hoards.  Smiley

Very true Grasshopper Cheesy
You can only find what the machine will detect and no more, so if you know your machine you are "ordinary" if you don't know your machine then your rubbish......................................If you find more than the machine is capable of then your just talking bulls#*t Grin
