Found today, inscription reads "Gloria in excelsis Deo" Latin for "Glory to God in the highest" It is an example of the psalmi idiotici ("private psalms", i.e. compositions by individuals in imitation of the biblical Psalter) that were popular in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. (Taken from Wiki)
Was wondering if anyone could date it,the back is completely blank & smooth thanks.  Huh

Sorry Mick - I've not seen one of these before so I'm not sure what it's from. Not a badge, brooch or pendant if there are no signs of a fastening or suspension loop. So a religious medallion of some sort? I would guess early post-medieval but could be later.

It is very nice though.

It took me a while to figure out exactly what was on your medal. Your pici is upside down. I think you'll find it is the Archangel Michael. Have attached an info page for you to have a look at.

It was suposed that just having his medal in your pocket gave you extra protection from the evils of this world.

p.s. Michael was said to be the Soldier of God and is always depicted with wings, armour and sword.

The Latin is from one of the parts of the Mass / Eucharist, called the 'Gloria' funnily enough! It comes just before the Old Testament Reading, though it isn't used in Lent (where we are now) or Advent.
