well my mum and dad gave me this medallion yesterday that they have had for many years aquired from somewhere, it looks very old and has some patina damage, there is some writing around the edge which i cant make out except for a cross near the top, a 'V' and maybe some 'O' or 'E's, cant see any thing on the back.

So a little help would be much appreciated
thanks.

A harness mount. From what date would you estimate and who would have worn it, romans? Thanks for your help

The lettering is hard to make out because it is in reverse. It reads 'AVE MARIA GRACIA PLE'.

This implies that it is either intended as a seal matrix, or was made by an illiterate craftsman who wasn't aware that the lettering would appear in reverse when cast.

Could you post a picture of the back please?

I am wondering whether this is a modernish attempt to imitate a medieval item.

Lovely find as Peter says it reads "hail mary full of grace" and is a Museum of London type IV pendant dating between 1270-1370. The thoughts are that it is representational of one (or more) of the military religious orders...Templars, Hospitalers etc. Whether they were used by the knights or sold as a way to raise funds to help towards the crusade isn't known.
The reversed legend legend isn't unknown and could be either someone just getting it totally wrong or some strange believe that the Muslims may be able to understand it easier as their writing runs from right to left Huh
This is a similar one reversed.
