Well found.

It's a St Andrew's mint penny of John Balliol.

Pretty scarce, but I'm afraid you have probably severely reduced any value it may have had to a collector by the spit and foil treatment  Cry

Thanks for the id,  I'd have never have sold it anyway, good to know for the future though in case any more turn up.

I was going to ask how The Doc could read the mint signature - I'd got as far a John Balliol - I had thought that all Scottish coins of this period just had 'Rex Scotorum' on the reverse (and I couldn't see the number of points on the mullets) - but apparently St Andrews signed their mint signature CIVITAS SAN DRE - and you can see the 'N' from this - and there isn't an 'N' in Rex Scotorum. Nice coin - depending on exactly which issue (is it 1st) it booked at ~£150 in fine in Coins of Scotland and Ireland (2003 ed), but (whilst you can do things about it) it has been foiled.....

I've got a bit of a soft spot for St Andrews myself as that's where my wife decided she was going to go out with me rather than her fiancee..... Smiley

Sorry Roland (and others). I guess I have become a bit lazy and don't tend to explain how I reach an ID. I will try and say a bit more in future.

Several years ago I did a series on hammered ID's, posting a coin, seeing who could ID it and then adding explanations.

Here is an example, with the image re-added because the pics have been deleted from all these old threads. If there's enough interest, I will revive a few more, or even try some new ones.

I'm getting there on the 'normal' hammered - after all I'm more of a romanist Smiley - but as I don't see tht much Scotish then I don't get chance to look it up much (I've got the book...) - It's always useful (not just to me) to see how you (or I or anyone else) has identified a coin - after all at some point we (I) wouldn't have been able to identify something (and there are plently of coins / items I still can't) - it's only by practice and having things pointed out that we get better - I've found recently that finding something (like groats or somesuch) makes me go and learn more about them....... Smiley I just need to find some more things  Grin
