Hello, found this bronze seal in North Wales on Sunday. I'm sure it's medieval, and have traced the picture as a religious scene of a pelican pecking its chest and feeding the blood to its young, which signified Jesus suffering for mankind sins. The legend reads +S' DD ? ? ? ? DE GWEDYR* There is a well known family known as Gwedyr or Gwydyr from North Wales that had a castle. Also the first part of the legend could read DDRAEG which I believe means dragon, but would a seal saying Dragon of Gwedyr make any sense especially with a religious scene? One other possibility is I have seen seals with DD in the legend meaning Doctor of Divinity, and this is usually a seal of an important religious person. I would really appreciate any help in identifying this interesting Welsh seal. Many thanks, Ray

It was me that suggested it might read 'DDRAEG DE GWEDYR' on the other site. Will be interesting to see what the FLO makes of the inscription.

The image on the seal reminds me of the story of the Pelican(?) - where the mother bird pulls out her feathers to wound herself so that predetors go after her rather than her children (there seem to be three smaller birds below) - and that is a religous scene, but it could be something else.
