Hi everyone ... mrs h has been approached by someone at work to see if she knew anyone who could come up with an answer as to what this object is.

Her friend has recently moved into an old house, and this was left behind by the previous owners. Naturally, her friend is puzzled by the object.

all ideas will be passed on ...........   [sensible ones, that is!  Grin Grin]

Saw something very similar on Time Team last night, only much smaller that also had carvings on it. They said it was Roman and because of its size, it was some kind of portable
alter where the person away from home could conduct prayers to the gods. This is much larger but is similar in shape and the fact it also has carvings? Just a thought.

i agree , on right side os stone there is a hole /slot that a gate latch could slide into , i would say its a section from a gate post or a whole gate post with most of it below ground

Looks like a victorian gate post pillar, with possibly the rest of it beneath the ground unless a bit is broken of.
Could be that the hole on the side was were the hinges was fixed may be with lead ? in wich case if complete you should find another one below ground. Or e-mail a picture to a reclamation yard for an id Wink

The main body of the pillar looks like cast concrete about the same age as the stone flower container beside it. The "ball" object looks like stone and seems older, maybe the top of a gate post?

Love it what ever it is, but the decoration looks a bit art nouveau to me

Grin Grin looks like concrete to me too but difficult to say. I'm afraid it definitely isn't a lost Roman sarcophagus  Grin Grin Grin . By the design I would say turn of the century perhaps?  looks like the start of some sort of plaque just beneath the earth  Wink

Probably says 42 The Grange  Grin Grin Grin
