GARRETT ARM CUP EXTENSION

Hi all my fellow Garrett users, im in the process of having a prototype arm cup extension made up.

As your probably aware the standard settings are too low and the arm cup sits slack on your forearm and is also  nose heavy. After seeing a similiar contraption in the US i thought id give it a go.

The benefits are that the armcup is moved back by a few inches thus sitting more comfy on your arm and also acts as more of a counterbalance reducing the amount of stress on your wrists.

Providing my prototype works out how many of you would be interested in one i.e (Ace,At Pro) users

Someone in the US has already done this and the've been for sale on ebay for a year or so. Saying that their's is a solid lump of aluminium and very heavy which is the last thing anyone wants when you have a lightweight detector,   so if you could make yours out of a piece of lightweight tubing I'd say you'd have a winner.

As an alternative if you drill an additional hole behind the last hole on the Garrett top tube you can fix the armcup back another 2" or so which makes a big difference and costs nothing and adds no extra weight.

Thanks for the input, that pic is taken from the guy in the U.S, to drill another hole in the existing tube then puts overhang on the arm cuff and not been the strongest design in the world  Wouldnt help.

The aluminium bar Im using will be hardly noticeable and with the compensation it will make for the not so light detech coil i use. I will keep this post running and should have some hours under my belt before the rally on the 23rd  to give a heads up.

There is nothing wrong with the Garrett armcup design or fixing method. There is no weakness and $hundreds of thousands of dollars has been spent over 30+ years in R&D to make sure of that.

 If there were any weaknesses in the garrett range of detectors they wouldn't be the most popular and widely sold detector on the planet.

There would be millions of Garrett users complaining on the forums, at rallies and on Youtube.! and everyone would be selling their broken detectors 

 I have adapted and used my Euroace now for several months without any sign of a problem or weakness

Good luck with your project but I seriously doubt it will get off the ground. Tooling up and manufacturing items like this in very small numbers can never be cost effective. The retail price is likely to be prohibitivly expensive.

Im having a second prototype manufactured now peanut, out of aluminium tubing as you very kindly suggested may be a better option.

excellent idea Norman . look forward to seeing a prototype shortly.

If you are thinking of making an extension out of tubing why not simply make a complete one -piece top tube instead with a longer arm section !

In fact why not simply offer a straight piece of tubing instead of one with an S bend ?  I hear that straight top tube conversions are a very popular modification especially in the US

Just a quick update Guys

I went to the engineers today and compared the two prototypes together solid bar and hollow tube.

Im going with the solid bar for strength etc and the difference in weight overall is hardly noticeable once on the detector.

Im having four made up initially and should be ready for the end of the week.

with cost of production etc the end product is estimated to be retailed at £28.00 + p&p

Im sure you will have some constructive criticism on this Sir Peanut

It sets the arm cup back 90mm from the original rear setting, i personally feel the benefit with having fairly long forearms it now sits closer to my elbow rather than halfway down my forearm and has a eliminated a lot of stress that i felt down to my wrist.

On the extension it has two settings (the rear hole is just to reduce some weight) it only weighs 4.8g including the bolt and wing nut.

surely it cannot weigh 4.8 grammes Norman ?  if it does it must be made of paper mache 

Looks like just the ticket for those  whose knuckles scrape the ground. how much will you be marketing them for ?
