Hi Jed, I have an xterra 705 and it kept switching itself off, it turned out to be a spot of rust on the battery connectors, apparently this is a common problem with xterra's. Mine was under warranty so I sent it to Joan Allen who sorted it out. Take the batteries out and shine a torch in the compartment and see if you can spot any rust.
Can't help you with the volume setting though.

Right it could be a return to shop?Huh
When you turn on watch the screen and note if at any point it reads, "factory reset" or words to that effect. if it does and you are only pressing and letting go of the power button then the keypad is sticking which means it neads a new keypad. These aren't expensive but more an annoyance to fit.
You can either return it under the shop guarantee or if you want a new keypad contact Minelab in Ireland Wink.

hya geoff i was advised to  clean the battery terminals with cotton buds and alcohol-they were quite dirty but not rusted
after that i took it to different location and it seems to be fine now-found a couple of rusty cans and what looked like the remains of a mortar!
it didnt turn off by itself again -i think i wasnt getting a clean connection with the batteries
so panic over(for now)thanks everybody
