Brian Read is currently working on a new book on thimbles which he hopes to have ready for Xmas. He is still looking for material for this book and is especially interested in any unusual thimbles pre 19th century. If you think you may have any thimbles that could be of interest he would be pleased to see them. Please let me know and I will pm you his e-mail address. Many thanks.

Hi Zeus. It may be worth sending him a picture of the object. If he doesn't want to use it, he may still be the best person to give information on it. Although he is knowledgeable on all categories ( well maybe not coins!) he has a particular interest in thimbles. I will pm you with his e-mail address. Regards, Alan.

I have two hand made thimbles that I found on a local beach some years ago. Both are quiet large and don't have tops, they are to big for use by women, so I believe  they are sailors thimbles. One has been stamped with a crown. I am sure Mr Read will be pleased to see them. If you PM me his Email I will send him details

Hi Geoff,
I realised later where I was going wrong. I saw the box in question but I had already sent the last message. Still finding my way round the site and making the odd error along the way.

Cheers,

Alan.
