I know you all love a mystery and thats what this is.

It's 110cm across, front is copper and the back is filled with leadand it weighs 950g. The bar attached to the back seems to be steel.

Needless to say I thought I'd at least found a Bronze Axe Head. No mistaking that signal, it nearly deafened me.

Any ideas ??

Val

Hi Byron
That was my first thought but as Hubby pointed out, it wouldn't have a steel bar at the back and a more modern repro. wouldn't have been filled with lead.
A friend suggested a lid off something but there is no sign of a handle. It really is an oddity.

A dome copper alloy lead filled iron pinned...........

Sorry no idea but perhaps it's off a leather belt and lead filled to increase weight to feel more expensive.

Naaa.  It aint that.   I think it was the bung out of the swimming pool.  Shocked

I don't know how I do it. Why can't I just find loads of ordinary Roman or Hammered coins like everyone else.

I'll have to start a display of 'Weird or What' Praps SKY TV might be interested. Grin

Val,

I found one exactly the same, except instead of lead it was filled with cement or morta. Odd. Maybe whatever they are they are unique to Pembrokeshire lol

Hi Jon

Funny you should say that. Last night I had a pick and a poke at mine and I've discovered it is a mixture of lime mortar with bits of lead in it.
I wonder if it was some sort of decoration. It must have looked quite impressive when it was new. This is the 3rd round thing I've found in the same area but the other 2 are much smaller with an iron back.

Age could be about right Rob. My guess is it was attached to something and probably exterior. Perhaps some sort of decoration.
I think I've found a dump site from where an old Manor House was re-furbished. Only a very small area detectable till the grass is cut. Have found one dateable piece of silver so far and that was 1797.

Geoff, I already did, when I was pulling Al's leg about not finding any.

But specially for you, here it is. Smiley
