welcome to the site mate ,

you must obtain permission from the landowner before detecting , there are tons of farms around the cardiff area and the vale where you can find just about anything but it can be fustrating sometimes when you find nothing , stick at it and the finds will come , learn your new machine and what it can do and always swing slowly and keep the coil as close to the ground as possible .

there are several clubs in the area including cardiff scan club , gwent detecting club . R.A.R.E  , and here of course which is not a club and free to join .

all clubs and DW hold regular rallies in the area , and most welcome new members .

hope this helps and good luck with your new hobby .,       oh and make sure you fill all your holes as this really annoys the farmers  Wink Wink
