Very! Nick, the small area you can see, I covered in rows and took about 4 hours and I know that by the time I did the last 2 or 3, I was beginning to miss bits and had to force myself to slow down.
But I can't fault it, it certainly did what I hoped.
When I've covered an equal area, I will try the large coil and see "if" it will find any deeper signals.

at that rate.... it looks to me like you're going to be in need of  some  help Geoff m'lad ..... nod nod.. wink .w...

I spent 3.0 hours sweeping the edge of a potato plot on Monday and I only managed a scant 200 feet 
I was dying to try fieldwalking the furrows but farmer Robert was watching me from the farmhouse like a hawk lol
I love walking freshly ploughed soil, you can tell so much about the history of a site from dating  the surface pottery and tile etc.

It's been 3 week since I got out to do a proper bit of stick wiggling And the weather has conspired to stop me, not only in keeping me in but the Maize fields are still rough plough and the pasture has grown like mad so my land is very limited.
This morning I decided that if I was going to get out, the weather forecast said "today's the day". I had the choice of either field boundaries (boring) or one 10 acre field that I did try a little while ago but gave up after only an hour, as it was so mineralised with the underlying iron ore. The reason this field is still available is that the farmer didn't spray it and the wireworm has eaten all the wheat seed, with some help from the local rabbit population
With the grotty mineralisation on a lot of my farms, earlier in the week I bought a 7 1/2" Minelab coil in the hope that the smaller foot print would cut down the almost continues iron signals.

While that end of the field is I think going to be the most productive as it's adjoining the road, I still have quite a bit to go lol


So the plan is to continue with the small coil and then go over the thirds with the Ultimate in all metal. With the small coil the 10 acres looks awfully big

Hi geoff ,

 i was interested to read you have land with high iron content , i have recently a new farm and its so mineralised the pinpointer goes off on the soil i have an explorer se which has no manual  auto ground balance and i am really struggling ,

i could use a smaller coil i have a 15" wot on it at the mo ,i went down to a 12 sef but no difference  i have only one line of discrimination  i cant get a steady  threshold tone untill i drop sensitivety to around 17 which at that point im not sure how effective the machine is

or i could run in all metal at higher sensitivity and put up with lots of noise but at least nothing would be nulled out

i tried it with a higher sensitivity and was getting hardly any  threashold tone ( 1 line discrim )and i am finding stuff like that but im not sure how much the machine is missing

any ideas would be great

its easier on the ears if i drop the gain a bit , but again will then be missing deeper small targets

 any one else any suggestions a different machine perhaps or any good settings to help ?

Hi David, I would honestly look at a smaller coil either the small Minelab, 8x6 SEF or Coiltek Joey but this is only going to "get you by" rather than solve the problem, you can try setting your noise cancel to a low channel (1, 2 or 3) which makes the machine run at a higher frequency which will help. You've done the obvious turning down the sensitivity and gain to quieten it down, don't worry about the sensitivity always think of it as controlling the size of target not depth as it controls the sensitivity of the returning signal the "power" of the outgoing is always the same.
The answer is to use a higher frequency machine on these sites something around the 18khz range like the G2 though even 14khz work quite well.

Hi again geoff, thanks for that

 i just went out with my girlfriends minelab  xterra 705 with a standard stock small coil and it worked fine,   so now im at home and going to try it with a larger coil and see if it still works fine .as of course im used to covering the ground with 15" wot so it was painfully slow with the small coil   and if it does then i will test it against the explorer to see if there is any depth difference .

I was thinking  (untill you mentioned frequancy that is ) wether the exterra was working fine either because i had a small coil on it ( so cutting the amount of signals being picked up )  or wether it was a less sensitive machine and was therefore just not picking up the minerisation

will test later

 do you know what freqauncy the xterra would be ?

It depends which coil it has as the Xterra's use V-flex which changes the frequency depending which coil you use, the "standard" coil is usually a 10" dd 7.5khz coil but if you have the gold pack it will probably be an elliptical 18.75khz

 i have a wot 15" and a sef 12" x 10 and a sef 15 x 12   not sure which to put on it do you know which should work best ?
