I was invited out for a days detecting with Roman Ray and his brother MC Hamered yesterday, on a farm he has managed to gain permission on quite close to me over here in Somerset, Grrrrrrrrr! Cheesy
Although our mornings finds didn't do the site justice, what a site it is. Now the area only has two farms but I managed to check the 1900 map and there were 3 other houses there at that time, which when we got into the first field was evident by the lumps and bumps adjacent to the road. But just how old were these houses? a question quickly answered by Mark as within seconds he had recovered a 16th century buckle, then if confirmation was needed I dug from only 4 inches a 15-16th century thimble. Ray chipped in with a Georgian pocket loss containing 2 coins a George III halfpenny and an unusual token. With Southampton on one side with the head of St Bevois and on the reverse the words North Wales and displaying the Irish Harp and crown....evasion money gone mad lol
Well as so often is the case on a new site we tried to cover as much land as possible and probably did ourselves out of more finds, so Ray if you go back, stay in that first field, at the top half and suffer the iron....the hammies are there Wink
Lunch came and we decided to up sticks and relocate to one of my sites up on the Poldens, two fields which proved to be quite quiet, though I did mange two Roman coins, one Anthoninianus, female bust Huh and as you can see a very low silver content.
And the second a follis on Constantine which was in a sorry state when found but with some overnight TLC has turned out quite respectably. The only silver find worth talking about fell to Mark in the shape of a lovely 1920 halfcrown, if only it could of been a couple of years older Cry Thanks guys for the invite it was a great day Wink
