Congratulations on such a great find!! They look fantastic!! I too was lucky enough to stumble across a small Bronze Age hoard as my first hoard! All I can say is report the find, and please, what ever you do, don't clean them, let the museums do that. I sent mine in a far worse dirty state than yours, and I'm certain yours will look stunning once a conservator has looked at them. Cheers, Jon.

A quality find and as mentioned by another poster, unusual to find a palstave mixed in with a predominanently socketed axe hoard. I am not aware of an axe head hoard like that previously, but there must have been a point of transition somewhere in history, so why not.

Looking forward to seeing them minus the mud after the museum have had them.

Great find - congratulations

I sent a photo to Mark Lodwick, Cardiff Museum and this is his reply -

I think that six of the axes are of 'South Wales' or closely related types, the smaller axe may be a type Welby or a Yorkshire type, I'll need to have a better look. The palstave is a Late Type, possibly of Type Isleham. All can be contemporary and are of Ewart Park metalworking tradition dated to c. 950 - 750 BC.

I have arranged to hand them in after Easter. In the meantime I am trying to get through to the Coroners office to report it.

Alan, did Mark tell you to contact the coroner?  Letting Mark know constitutes a recording so you are covered under the treasure act. Mark should contact the Coroner when he gets the hoard as he has the forms and detailed info.

Mark said he would contact coroner but asked me to do it as well.
All now done so now going to sit back and wait until I get the appointment with Mark to hand them in.
He is pretty sure that they will be declared treasure.
I would rather keep them than have the reward but I wont get the choice.
