Hi, can anyone date & give an explanation on the 3 marks that have been counter-stamped just under the chin on this 49bc denny please. I know in the photo it may look like the letters "I J L" but under the microscope it looks more like 3 small straight lines which in my opinion is a more accurate description.

those may be control marks which were stamped on coins to basically say they are good quality and do not need to be melted down ,unfortunateley lots of guys used to put control marks on coins so its pretty impossible to figure out who put the marks there.

a prime example of control marks is this,,there are 2 on this octavian coin of mine

sadly this coin is going on ebay today as ive just took car for m.o.t  and its not good Undecided Grin,,,,so if anyones intrested have a look,,,it is a scarce octavian coin ric 253  bmc 612
