I would not say they are rare but I have only found 2 in 2 years of detecting. They were used right up to 1993 as 10 new pence. but most of the older ones with silver content were probably collected by coin collectors.

Many years ago, Roll Eyes I heard that £5 of pre 1947 silver coins could be exchanged at the bank for £10. As I had a shop at the time and cash was the main way of paying, I saved £5 worth and took them in. Sad
Once again I have to say 'If only I'd known then what I know now'  Roll Eyes

I think thats prob.where most of the old silver coins went. I have found one in the last year.

Val

p.s. don't quote me on the 1947

Your correct Val about 1947, silver coins from 1920 to 1947 are .500 fine
and prior to 1920 are .925 fine.

I reckon that there might still be a few collectors with some pre 1920 coins out there.

My Dad and I used to collect Vicky bun coins (pennies) and pre-1920 silver coins way back in the 1950's when I were a kid .

He has 7x bags of coins weighing six stone 4lbs  Shocked .................. 1000's of coins which I've not yet found time to sort through.
Must be one of the biggest collections still in existance I should have thought.

I used to love half crowns as a kid . You really felt you had some buying power with a half crown. Never saw a crown though

I don't seem to find them very often and consider them a good find to make on a days detecting - obvoiusly prefer the pre 1920 varieties, but silver is silver at the end of the day.

Well done
