the disc at the bottom is it a coin ? or a token ?  when they have a hole it is usually for wearing around the neck isn't it like a love token ?

i've read recently that coins were worn round the neck to show allegience to whichever side you supported in the Civil War in case you got caught it would indicate which side you were on but not be incriminating to those not aware of the significance .?
