thanks guys for the efforts in trying to id this one. sent mick(rally organiser leisure premotions) the pictures he replied he would try to id through his contacts.also i will take it to the next club meeting perhaps mark lodwick will id it.i will update the thread when i find anything out.thanks again. had a update from the museum tonight on the buckle they said:-

still more research needed to id nothing like this to compare it to, so i wait and hope.

They don't know either then Ian, at the moment you must consider that as a unique find, there are no parallels so they ain't gonna find anything at the moment. Can only think that it is a piece that has been designed for a specific purpose and in some ways it is quite crude!
A lovely find which you may never be able to tie down, a bit arts and craftsy for the period so made locally I would guess.
