I agree, a jew's harp - the design didn't change for a long time, so anywhere between 17th and 19th century.

Nice one Rob, I like to find jews harps, it is just a reminder that they didn't have the other portable devices that we have to play music while out in the fields.

I believe in the UK these were known as  Gewgaw
I found this word in a history book from the UK The Jew's harp is known world-wide by many different names, depending on the country of origin.
Some examples are:

England - Gewgaw
Germany - Maultrommel (which means mouth drum)
Japan - Koukin
Russia - Vargan
Siberia - Khomus
Philippines - Kumbing and kubing
Italy - Scacciapensieri
Norway - munnharpa or munnharpe
France - guimbarde
Bali - genggong
