Hammered, Roman, Etc.....

Well today Mr Sporn and Mr Jam came out to play, in the form of MChammered (Mark) and Deadlock (Al). I have to say that the weather was incredible, with blue skies and no wind all day.........that was until they both rained on my parade
Apart from one disk that "could" be a 17thC token I didn't have a sniff of a coin all day
But after only an hour and a half we stopped for a coffee and Mark had two pre decimal pennies and Al had a Georgian halfpenny, me nothing.
So we changed fields and after only 10 minutes Mr Sporn sorry Mark, was smiling far too much and this is the reason why.....................

Well just after that it was Al's turn to smile, this time as a result of him finding his first Roman grot, illegible but he was happy. Not happy enough it seems as within 30 mins or so he was back this time he was taking the P___. Al had only found one Roman coin before today and that was a silver antoninianus, a coin I would add, that I have never found.......Well, he only went and found another one, granted it is probably a barbarous issue and is either silver washed or a low grade silver but none the less....come on



He was to follow these with another small grot towards the end of the day.

Well that was the Hammered and the Roman, which left me with the etcetera First was the thinnest, bent silver finger ring I have ever found, a tiny Roman fibula (or part of one) the scabbard part of a sword hanger and the most interesting for me and from 11", what could be a toll road pass from the late 18th century.


All in all a great day out and hopefully everyone went away happy......well everyone but me that is

Great finds. The hammered is a Henry VI groat, as you said, and it's rosette-mascle issue.

Can't help on the Roman ID sorry.

I like the toll pass very much as well - probably a lot scarcer than the groat!

Thanks Peter, I don't know if I'm more shocked at getting the groat right or my guess at the Toll road pass. I managed to track it down quite easily and below is what it would of looked like. I've not cleaned the other side as yet, so I'm not sure how much remains

I'm not sure if this is correct but this is what I've found so far and if true then it has nothing to do with the adjoining toll road.


The King's Private Road was the route from St. James's Palace to Hampton Court. It dates back to the third decade of the seventeenth century. In the reign of Charles II, the route was shortened and followed the current line of the King's Road to Fulham, running through fields and market gardens. At this time there was at least one gate across the King's Road and this was shut after the seeds had been sown on the surrounding land and was not reopened until after the harvest. By 1711, there were six gates across the road. However, by then the road was in such poor condition as a result of the wagons of market gardeners taking their produce to London that it was closed and the gates were locked for the next three years. By 1719, the road was in use again but the locals had difficulty acquiring passage and petitioned the Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury to recover "their immemorial custom, use and possession (for we were never denied a passage till late)". This led to an edict "to permit the tennants of the lands adjoining to the King's Road, through Chelsea, to have free passage through the same, with their carts and horses, in the manner which they have been accustomed to;..." The six gatekeepers also petitioned for payment for three years work on the road and on 22 February 1722/3 it was agreed that they would be paid œ5 per annum. The King's Road remained the King's Private Road until Christmas 1829 when it became a public road. The first passes were probably introduced in 1722/3 in order to recoup the œ30 per annum paid to the six gatekeepers and possibly to pay for road repairs. The passes were probably issued to local landlords and tenants for a modest fee and others who used the road and did not have a pass would have to pay more. This was George III's favourite route to Kew
