Mike,

A Papal Bull was a manuscript issuing an instruction or announcement from the Pope. It was signed and sealed with a metal seal, usually lead, bearing the Popes insignia.

I got a pair of them now, found 20 years apart so can’t be very common around these parts. The other one is Pope Urbanus V, showing a bit more ware on the faces.

If you think about exactly what they are, it's a chance in a life time to find one, never mind two.

How many Papal Bulls came to this Country ? How many are hidden away in archives ? most I imagine. That doesn't leave many. I wonder how many where destroyed during the dissolution of the Catholic Churches. That can be the only way some of the seals got into the fields. They where almost considered to be sacred so def. wouldn't have been thrown out.

Lucky Steve. Great finds.
