Something I found last year in the field behind the house at quite a depth, still has the wooden core in!

Pretty sure its off a keg. Probably an early predecessor to Crown House Buckley  - I used to serve that in one of my pubs about 15 years ago.

Nice find

Cheers

That looks like a threaded 'shive' holder which is situated on the curved side of the cask. When the cask is horsed the 'shive' is uppermost and the hole you see in the middle is a partly cut-through piece which you knock a 'spile' into (a peg of wood which can be hard - lets out the least amount of CO2 or soft - lets out the most CO2) and allows you to condition the ale as necessary. The 'shive' is also the part that's removed when the cask is returned to be cleaned. The only other thing it could be is the bung hole where the tap goes and the wooden part of that is called the 'keystone' but I have a feeling it's the former, not the latter.
