I recently found this coin shaped item in a ploughed field.

 It appears to be decorated with a Crown atop a Shield containing a Sun shape in the middle. Around the top outer edge is a small amount of beading before the rest are 'worn' off or cut around its rough edge. The thickness of the coin is uneven, it looks as though it was squashed, a few gouges around the edge. The back of the object is blank, either its always been blank, or there is a feint detail that has been worn away through time, but this may be me seeing things.

Sorry for the terrible pictures, had to take them with the ipod as our camera was out of battery!
Any help identifying this would be appreciated, if better pictures are needed, ill take some when our camera is up and running.

Thanks

Nice find farshot, it's a French coin weight for a gold "ecu au soleil" from the late 15thC.
Now all you've got to do is get out there and find the coin that goes with it which is this little baby;

Thanks Geoff Smiley

This was more informative than I thought it would be! Sorry for the terrible photos though, glad You were able to tell what it was haha.
 Brilliant, I'll be detecting this field a lot more then! Me and My dad have permission to dig on a lot of farmland in Bristol, around Dundry hills and the Maes Knoll Tump, though we're not allowed on that part.
 I've found a few interesting things up on the field where I found this coin weight, hopefully the gold pieces that were weighed are up there somewhere too! I'll keep in touch, may need some more identifications too Smiley

Thanks again, I appreciate the help!
