If it's not Roman I'll eat my hat!  Grin

Looks similar to others in my book Roman artefacts.

Hi Kev and what a cracking find, are there any other fixing points on the reverse other than the loop at the top?
I'm pretty happy with the Roman bit, as Bob has said it does look similar to others and not far removed from the one on the Muppet show Grin
If there are no fixing points then as the hoop is the wrong way for a pendant then my guess would be a steel yard weight. There are quite a few different figures portrayed on copper alloy weights, but it's only a maybe Wink

Kev - its definately Roman in my untrained eye and a stunning find.

No matter what you do though, please, please, please do NOT let RJM clean it for you! Wink

Great find mate - pop a bit of renaissance wax on it and it will come up a treat!

Firstly Kev stunning find, and the best i had seen that day.
Kev for those who hadn't seen it "in person" any chance of including a photo of the side profile of the Eagle ?
If it's not Roman then i will happily watch RJM eat his hat (though i dont think for a second it isn't Roman...especially as there were plenty of Roman coinage in the area too)
Benets Artefacts, 2nd edition shows a few Roman eagle finds, admittedly some are dagger pommels (page 107/108) and mounts (page 175) but they all have very similar features, overly large eye and exaggerated curvature of the beak.
Closes i could find on UKDF is a Roman "cart fitting" (not that i think yours is) but has a striking similarity.
heres link to full description of it.

As a matter of interest , I saw Three Steel yard weights found so that adds another bit to the puzzle
