Hi all,

I keep finding these small lead items all over my land and I have no idea what they. They seem to be a rolled up lead cylinder with a whole right through the middle. Also apear to have black and White paint on them. They are probably modern but I would just like to find out what they are lol.

Cheers Jon

It never ceases to amaze me what comes up. It always pays to ask though, most times someone has seen it before and can give a good guess answer.
I've found similar bits of lead and have no idea what they might have ben used for.

Do you live anywhere near a body of water, like a lake or the sea?

These look like fishing net weights, they would be put around the edges of a net thrown by hand.

If they are found in a field, they could be bird netting weights. The sort of thing you would put over plants or trees. Any orchards near the find sites?

Hi Eric

Good thinking, and yes I do live by the sea. I find these in fields right near the Pembrokeshire coastal path. And thinking about it I tend to find them in groups, maybe a net left on the ground and rotting away to just leave the weights?

Thanks

Thanks Eric!!

After pointing me in the right direction I have been able to identify them properly as 15th century fish net sinkers.

This makes sense as I have found numerous medieval fishing weighs in the fields and there are large deposits of fish shells all over.

Thanks again
