Well the buckle I found at Glastonbury had finally dried out after having the mud carefully removed. so I spent last night sealing it for posterity in wax. Took about two hours all told, but I am more than happy with the results.

Its described in Ross Whiteheads book - Buckles 1250-1800 as follows:

No 476. curved frame with five deep rabbets. Lateral and transverse grooved decoration on the outer edge of each loop. Bifid nob at either end of the strap bar, which is set back from the frame. 33mm x 42mm. circa 1400 - 1500

Suggests a specific function which the most likely is to secure armour.

They are identical Trys - I got a theory that they are from one maker.

They look too similar for mass production in numerous places.

Definately not a common type of buckle so you might be right!
