Hi all, I would like your thoughts on this Item that I found on monday. When i found it I thought bottle top or foil, but last night i cleared out my finds pouch I began to think otherwise!! It's heavy for it's size and i'm convinced of it being gold. I have posted on another forum and I have had a few responses some suggesting saxon but I think it's unlikely over here. Any ideas?
Cheers

A fascinating find trys - well done.
Certainly looks like gold and of considerable age - may turn out to be undateable though if there is no decoration to give any clues - could be Bronze Age I suppose?

Will need to be declared as possible Treasure.

Looks like it's your year this year Trys, plain as it is it's a fantastic find, looks like it's treasure trove. The wire around the outside may be the best clue, I can see why they are saying saxon.

Cracking find - my immediate though was "ooh that a bit of Saxon Gold there!"

I have just had a quick look at Nigel Mills Saxon & Viking Artefacts book and the item in the bottom right is rather similar in my opinion!

Hope this helps you!

Keep the site informed about how it goes Trys!

Well Done

Close up and worth a few quid Trys in this form - not sure what it would be worth in its current shape - but if it is what it pertanes to be then Welcome To The DetectingWales.com Treasure Club!

PM me if you want the value range. Was it a Welsh find? If so then we are really hitting the Saxon lately!

Cheers

Granted its not identical, but damn similar!

The comparison points include:
The stone in the centre (your is missing - try sieving the hole)
The beading (trim) around the outside.
The overall shape.
The colour.
The size.

In my minds eye I imgine it being ripped from someones neck in battle and that is why the suspension loop is missing. Nice to dream, eh?

It better not be a bloody bottle top now - can we see the reverse please?

Hope this all helps

Hi Neil thanks for all the pics and comparisons. I've heard back from mark- his initial thought is that it's bronze age! a biconical bead which would make sense as it is made from two thin sheets of gold which have collapsed through time, but until he has examined it I guess all options should be kept open.
If it does turn out to be a bottle top then i'll eat my detector!! Shocked Shocked Shocked Grin

lovely find Trys you just have to go back and find the missing piece.

PS, if it does turn out to be a bottle top and you do eat your detector, please feel free to pm me for a good sauce and vegetable accompaniment.
