hello peeps.i have been given permission to detect a piece of farmland near swansea which is a suposed battle site.the locals call it cae coch but noboby seems to know who was battling who or when.would i need permision of the local archeological society to detect there? where is the best place to research this battle site?i have tried the interweb but cant get any info on it.
i cant tell you exactly where it is because the owner has been hassled a lot by detectorists in the past and would probably shoot me because he is a bit of a loon but is o.k with me to go there.
would i have to go to the aberystwith library site?

No you won't need any special permission to detect on it, especially if you can't even find it on the net. If it was a protected Battlefield the land owner would have a copy of the scheduling and wouldn't let you on it.
Unfortunately I can think of many towns and villages that have stories/legends of battles, many of these will have some fabric of truth even if it is only a small skirmish.
Knowing south Wales the 3 eras you are usually dealing with are Roman (unlikely to find any evidence) 15thC and Owain Glyndwr (best evidence will be iron arrowheads) and the Civil war (lead musket balls).
Give it a go and see what comes up but bear in mind knowing the rough area is no real help to finding the actual spot as it can be quite localised.

Hey Mike. If you want a buddy to go with you as that area looks really remote and one shouldn't go alone let me know as i am free. As for how deep is deep then i would say i wouldn't go no more than 3-4 inches

The depth SSi's is not below the plough soil, ie were the soil changes colour from cultivated to natural. If it's permanent pasture then you should only go an inch or two.
Ask her when it was ploughed last and go from there.. most ploughs are set to between 6"-9" and that would be your depth.

If you have rock outcropping then this is usually a good sign as it means it is constantly eroded and nothing is going to be too deep so you should be OK.

Hi Mike.  Most SSI sites are noted because there is something unusual growing there. Trouble is you might be disturbing the roots but if it's high altitude it's probably rock plants anyway.
Just be careful how you put the soil back.  Grin

Cae Goch means Red Field.

Could be from a battle site or just the local soil and geology makeup.

its probably because of the geology i guess.sometimes if i dont get a chance to go to stone henge on the summer solstice i go there with a few beers and watch the sun go down behind the castle instead of watching it come up over stone henge
