where did you read this information ??, as some beaches are SSSI, some under the control of the National trust so would be out of bounds.

Yes mate I know that but where does it say ok to detect on any beach in the UK, that was the bit I was querying, where he had read that. As some are transferred to the National trust, and other authorities re ownership or control.

Yes sorry your absolutely right some beaches are in effect out of bounds. what I was referring to was local councils trying to impose charges for locating on beaches within their area and the crown laying claims of ownership to land, No man or woman has the right to own or name land we are caretakers we do not own any bit of soil on the planet,  it is there for everyone to use my family have history going back thousands of years and have claimed nothing as their own we are stateless people.

Hmmmm; me thinks that I can detect something of a minefield here! Perhaps, like time, ownership is an illusion.

As I understand it the settlers who bought Manhattan Island for a handful of beads, walked away and thought "fools they gave up their land rights for a handful of beads".  The Indians, on the other hand, walked away and thought " fools, they think that they can own land".

Me thinks, I just stepped on a "APLM"!  Roll Eyes

Uuuummmm !!!!

No permit required for 2016/17 that's great news !!! but I don't think that's the end of it.

The crown estate and London port authority have slapped a whopping  £36 for  a day licence to search eyes only and to  scrape the Thames foreshore in certain areas up to about 3 inches. A three year licence is set at £75. I fear the worst for the future of  detecting on crown estate beaches. If they can make money they will and if there's been enough of a demand I believe they will start to charge for a licence. I hope I am proved wrong but as I speak I believe they are setting the systems up to rip us off big time !! I just don't trust them ...........if they do start charging what would you do ? how could we protest ? as I say I hope I am wrong !!!

Darn it; invested in a bungee and a sand scoop for me beach detecting. Good job I kept hold of me spade.

On top of all this, I hear that they are going to issue new £1 coins and take the present ones out of circulation; starting in March!  Shocked

Will have to start specialising in hammies and hoards. Smiley

Its an emotive concept paying for a beach licence and I am somewhat torn on it:

Part of me thinks hang on we have never had to pay, remove vast amounts of rubbish and 'sharps' from the beaches, its a non sedentary activity and promotes Health & Well Being, we sometimes return lost items and generally cause little 'beach' issues. Why should we pay when other beach activities such as fishing, surfing, kite flying, bait digging, shell hunting, dog walking, beachcombing, etc do not have to pay for their hobby and have arguably far more of a negative environmental and social impact.

Then however I consider what I get out of a trip to the beach with the wind blowing, waves crashing, the solitude and the chance of a decent find. I think I would quite happily pay to be able to continue to do this.

In realistic terms even if a beach wide licence is brought in, it would never be enforced. Who would enforce it? How would they enforce it? Would it be a civil or a criminal offence? When did you last see a police officer on the beach?

Interesting debate. Lets hear a few more opinions.

Cheers

Hi Neil

I'm in the same boat as you in terms of paying for something I truly enjoy ,if the theoretical beach detecting  licence was reasonable then I would probably  go ahead and pay.
However my main grudge against the crown estate(and the Duchy of Cornwall)  is  how they view Metal detectorists as a soft target to make easy bucks and how they would try to make us look like mugs. While other groups  enjoy the total freedom of the beach without paying a cent they target us as a group to make money possibly because they believe we do it for ONLY for   money and reward which is blatantly not wholly true.In fact It is very rare to find anything of value and its all about a simple hobby that involves outdoor exercise ,socializing and developing interests in history.
I also object tot the possible way in which they may have duped the metal detecting fraternity by insisting on free beach  permits just to explore the potential market for making money .Only time will tell if we as a group have been truly snared in a trap set by men in grey suits who see us as easy prey to make money from.
As I say I hope I am wrong about a beach detecting licence for crown estate beaches but looking at whats happened to London's mudlarkers I believe there's something bad blowing in the wind !!!

Perhaps, just maybe, they are somehow cutting costs on administration. But I do wonder if they will get round to licensing detectors, or detectorists, when they bring in new regulations and licenses for the hobby and sport of air-gun shooting.

Maybe it's like politics and they leek information just to see what response they get. Big outcry and they say it was just an idea they were looking at; end of story. No outcry and wham bam thank you man, they hit us with it!

Or are we just giving them ideas. It will all go away when we form the "Republic"! Wont it?  Undecided
