an early start and techony and i hit them fields.

apart from the large amount of lead, bullets and tin foil, we managed to winkle out a few finds of note.

it's not often we see a barrel tap posted, but this one came complete with heart shape handle.
the thimble is about 17th century, and the Medieval button about a 100 years earlier.

so a nice date range .... well worth going back some day to the field.

a nice gilt button
a beautiful decorated spindle whorl
a 4th century nummus, with a gateway tower on the reverse.
and a general pic of them altogether.

Love the barrel tap Alan. Its unusual to find one with the key still in situ and for it to be heart shaped and I can't see a "hammer point" for knocking it into the barrel. Most odd as they normally have a flat square bit about a cm sqare to hammer so that the tap pops into the barrel.

Nicely decorated spindal whorl as well mate. Does anyone out there have the foggiest idea how to date them from Roman to early Victorian?

I have been asking the same question about dating the spindle whorls Neil and It is normally only able to date if found in an archaeological context. Other wise as Chef says it is a item that has done its job over the centuries and has not really been developed. But from asking a lot of people they say the same as us. Notoriously difficult to date.

sunday - areal hot day here, but the bonus of detecting on a freshly sown field.......... which proved to be very very quiet.

however, i did winkle out a childs thimble, a very worn Georgian halfpenny and a sestertius, [of good bronze quality] which has the goddess on the reverse and has the obcverse completely damaged and eroded.

thats the sum total of a 9 hour trawl of the field !!

damned hard work ..
