rally find Roman relics near Hadrian's Wall
Last updated at 12:33, Tuesday, 05 April 2011

A coin bearing an image of a sun god was the prime find at a charity metal detecting rally near Hadrian’s Wall.

Sam Bailey with his detectorAround 140 treasure hunters from across the UK went to the rally, held in nine fields at Laversdale on Sunday.

Their haul included Roman brooches, Roman bracelets hammered silver coins, Victorian pennies, horse shoes and a musket shot.

It was the first detecting rally for Estelle Bailey, who is the fundraising chairman of the organisers, the Rotary Club Brampton and Longtown and she was quickly caught up in the excitement.

Estelle told the News & Star: “It was a fantastic day, absolutely fantastic.

“The good weather helped and it was very family orientated, lots of parents came with their children.”

Earnings from the rally totalled about £2,000. The money will be split between the rotary club’s charities.
