             Swindon trip sat.march 12th 
Early morning at Nantgarw and 25 members eagerly awaited the arrival of the coach to take us to Hook Farm, near Swindon for the Wooton Bassett and District Rotary Club Rally.
There were twelve  fields available, pasture and some vast stubble ones.
At the control point for signing on were catering stalls, serving everything from bacon rolls to full English breakfasts, lots of tables and seats to rest our weary bones later in the day too.
Detecnicks had a trade stall selling all sorts of detecting stuff, parts new and used and even new or secondhand detectors.
The Rotary club had raffle tickets for sale and our entry tickets had a lucky number on them for another prize draw.
After a short briefing a air-horn was sounded and we were off !! A couple of hundred detectorists scattering in all directions to the fields of their choice.The M4 motorway run alongside some of the fields, being within a hundred yards of fast moving noisy traffic was quite an experience.
Lunchtime gave us the chance to check if our raffle tickets had won any prizes, some made their way onto our coach.
In a corner of one of the stubble fields was a lot of activity, apparently lots of Roman stuff was coming up. Brooches, bronze and even silver coins appeared,and of course lots of grots.A gold stater was found on another field which must have been the find of the day.
We eventually made our weary way back to the coach , some to show their finds to the “not so lucky” of us . As usual most of us found the usual buttons,buckles,tubes and lead, but some of our members were luckier than others.
Paul Minton had a very nice silver denarius and two bronze romans.
Mark Street found a roman bronze and two well defined Georgian pennies.
Norman Oxley was lucky with a medieval trapezoid buckle and a silver Victorian brooch.
Ann Oxley was lucky with two cracking roman bronze coins.
Chris Leach had an iron foot patten.
Rod Holt found a brace of hammered shillings, a James 1st and a Charles 1st.Robert Thomas also had a hammered in the shape of a Henry 3rd.
David Evans found a spectacular flint arrowhead “eyes only”, it was dated late neo/early bronze age by the Flo’s.
A small bottle of champers was donated for the “ find of the day “ which went to the flint arrowhead.Well done David.
So, another successful and enjoyable day came to a close and we made our way home, weary but happy. We look forward to our next R.A.R.E. outing…byron matthews….vice-chairman

Least you lot found stuff, got a couple of grotty grots and a george silver,

just a shame that some pepole cant understand simple rules like not detecting on the new wheat part of the field, it wasnt as tough there werent enough land to go on
