Being in the middle of a week off work, I took the opportunity to join Rob and Ray on a journey over the bridge yesterday. We met somewhat groggy eyed at 7.15am and headed off to Magor Services where we were then followed for well over an hour by two burly men in a white van. Thankfully it was Pipster and Nomad!

Our destination was the fabled 'Button Moon' which certainly lived up to its billing with a general "Button fest " for all throughout the day. We met chef who turned up fashionably late and got to the business of finding what our ancestors left behind. The first find of the day fell to me and was literally my second hole of the day and was a Roman Grotish coin - you can make out a head, but thats about it. Rob soon joined me on the Roman theme with a couple of grots of his own that he later gave to a happy farmer.

Other finds included a luggage label to Pip, a sixpence to Chef, a partifact of a  Medi spur to me, buckles to Ray and the numerous buttons, copper coinage, buttons, musket balls, buttons, tubes, buttons and buckle parts that make up a days detecting.

About 2pm Rob and Chef popped off to see the farmer to give him some Roman finds and a bottle of wine as a thank you and were rewarded with the news that he had another stubble field a short distance away we could go on. We didn't need to be asked twice and quickly 'convoyed' up and headed to pastures new.

Within minutes of being in the new field it became quite obvious that this one had been virtually undetected as I found a Two Shilling dated 1944 - {alas no where near as good as my last shilling} immediately. Pipster and Ray were busy building a nice collection of late medieval buckles, Chef wound a George III shilling, Paul a sixpence and Rob was resting his back.

The find of the day fell to Pipster who managed to winkle out not just a hallmarked silver can strip, but also a Roman fibula right at the end. Well done Pip.

Thanks for a great mid-week day out guys - really enjoyed myself

Cheers
Neil

Nicely written up Neil, thank you. Yes I think a good day was had by all and well done to Phil on finding his first Fibula and a 1st century one too.
I only had 13 buttons all day so I was way behind my usual count. I did have a few snaps by the look of it with a pot leg, rowel spur (part) and buckles. Really pleased with the Bull head shilling at the eleventh hour. Also found two (probably) 17th Century trade farthings, I love finding these but 9 times out of ten they are past identification. one other thing I found is the lead pointy thing with a hole, only thought I have is that it may be a plum bob of some sort.
Oh and I also managed a whole day without anything Roman Shocked.

Some nice finds for you all there, well done.

The label with Elsie Beckwith on is a gardening label from a rose (HT stands for 'Hybrid Tea') first grown in 1922.

Here is Elsie herself:
