Trying to figure out the age of a site I detect on - So far everything is 1880+  Looks like a lot of army stuff there such as ARP buttons.

The button is 25mm dia

The bullet is 15mm dia (bore size)

Army General Service button - I think that style are from about the 30's to the 50's.

It looks like a ringed mini bullet (I think they are called) to me thats hit something. Late 1800's I believe. I am sure our resident military expert can shed a bit more light.

Hi Simon, without seeing your bullet head first hand its difficult to say exactly, but its a 3 ring minnie design, most likely 55 Calibre, although .54 and .57 cal versions existed.
They came in a few varieties from muzzle loaded in waxed paper cartridges to rolled brass cartridges found in the Martini Henri rifle, they date from the late 1700 through to the late 1800

Good info on bullet heads you may find, at the above site, these guys make modern rounds for antique weapons to original spec

These were all found on the mountain side above Cwmbran.

There was possibly an army training camp there in the 1800.
One of the farms i used to shoot on in Mountain Ash  still has the 300yard range with the butts there, you can go after a storm and the rain has washed hundreds of those things out, you can pick them up by hand Lol, i used to leave the kids to occupy themselves with a trowel and pinponter, they'd have a bucket full in half hour with 303, 9mm all sorts, i kept them to melt in to fishing weights Smiley
it was an army training camp from the late 1700 and was an army transit camp in WW11 for the American forces. I was due to re-open the firing range as a business venture when the Farmer (a good friend who is dearly missed) unfortunately died. Sad

You're right Karl, there was a shooting range above Cwmbran, I used to play there as a kid. Smiley
