Ive been watching  a tv series on SKY-military channel called trench detectives. The lead archaeologist and his team were digging in a french WW1 battlefield,. I was enjoying the progamme until they started to slag off all metal detectorists as thieves and saying we were only interested in making money from our finds,.  These die hard archaeologists need to pull their heads from out of their butts and realize what metal detecting is all about,  . I was so wound up i turned it off,

no decent detectorist would detect on war graves, he must have been talking about night hawks they're all over the world not only in the uk.
i saw the programme as well and i enjoyed it thats only my opinion

Thanks for an interesting post Mark , This discussion has come up many times on here. Normally a time team episode winds one of us up. The only thing we can do is stick together and become a force to be reckoned with. What Detecting Wales has achieved since October is amazing. Its brought New and old detectorists together , English and Welsh Detectorists together, Irish, French and UK detectorists together. Its breaking down club barriers that (lets face it) should not have been there to start.

What we need to do is prove that the Vast majority of Detectorists are passionate and care for the hobby. We are not Nighthawkers and we follow all the guidelines set out for us. We need to show the establishment that we are not a threat to UK heritage but in fact are an asset, and if they could only put down the brushes that they've been busily tarring us all with over the past years , and talked to us sensibly,  they would see that.

Yes i totally agree with you tafflaff but its always the night hawkers
give us a bad name they want to realise we are not all the same
and get up to date on things i think half of the time they slag us off
cause they find less and perhaps worried that their jobs maybe at
stake we should be working together  it is wrong taking things from
war graves because if the artifacts are not with the bodies how can they
i.d the person that could be our great grand parents and i would like to
know my family had a decent burial as i beleive they died for us

take no notice of them mark i just let it go over the top of my head .. not every archeologist report their finds ... if they find something very valuble a quick flick in their pocket and straight too ebay its obvious they earn off it ... theres a perk in every job mate   ray

You are spot on Dave. Time Team episode in Greenwich Park they decided to go to the museums and look for the finds from a Roman Temple dig. Guess what? Most of the stuff had gone walkies! Not a metal detectorist to blame....

I saw the same Trench Detectives episode you saw. Disgraceful. If they were saying that a certain race was full of thieves and rigues they could be sued. Throw in "detectorists" are thieves and rogues and you can transmit it.
