I think its a half groat of his.

It looks like a Halfgroat (Two Pence) of king James 1st. One side shows the the rose with crown and the other is a thistle with crown. Looks like mint mark could be a Mullet, in which case it would date to 1611-1612. Very nice!

I suspected it was a James 1st penny but wasn't sure. Looks like it may be a half groat.

The mint mark is in fact a spur rowel dating it to 1619 - 20.

no no RJ, this is actually factual....because it comes from Stephen King....so it must be true Grin

i wasnt paying full attention, but it was somthing to do with a big ding dong between english and the scots about the monetry value of the coins being 12 times more for the same coin....cant remember which way though  Grin

Yes late medieval and post medieval Scottish coins were incredibly debased and were worth only one 12th of the equivalent English or continental coinage.
