Author Topic: Piece of bronze from DW13 - am I going mad or is it a crucified Christ?  (Read 2596 times)

I found this at DW13 and resigned it to my pocket until last night when out of boredom I cleaned it.

The more I look at it, the more it looks like a crusified Christ. Theres what appears to be ribs as well on it and a possible broken catch plate on the reverse.

It may well be a case of me looking too hard though and seeing what I want to see! Wink

Interestingly though I saw at least two other fair size pieces of bronze at DW13 - one being worked found by Mark (we speculated on it being part of a socketed axe} and another I think by Benny. Finding bronze is always a good indication of decent finds as it was a valuable commodity and would definately have been recycled.

I'd be interested in your thoughts on this one

looks interesting neil.
not overspill this was a cast of one thing or another at one time .
it may have  been a figurine with no arms or legs or they have rotted away with B.A.D.
SEND IT AWAY TO CONFIRM WITH PAS.

Cheers Rich - I also felt it was cast at some point. It doesn't feel or look like overspill bronze to me.

I'll show it to Mark Lowick on Wednesday and see what he thinks. I'll also try and forward the image to PAS. Update to follow.

Thanks guys

Hi Neil

The size and shape of your item reminds me of a Roman spatula handle i seen in this years British Museum annual report found by our very own Alan ThePastfinder

Just a thought  !

Alright Neil,I can see where you're coming from on this one! Yeah I did have a lump of bronze but can't really see any artefact in it so I think mine will end up in the scrap box although it does look like its got a good age to it unless anyone can suggest otherwise?
Cheers.

hmmm i'm wondering if it could be a handle off something Neil   Like my roman Spatuar handle,  it could be another type,  mine was the only one found of this type
there were a few different ones though,
