Lovely variation of finds CS.  You've definitely braved the elements to do a bit of digging.  Do you know what the lead thing is which looks like a walking stick knob/chefs hat.  I've found a few of those and have always wondered, but never asked.

Yes Tom I would keep them, and I think I can remember Cheff,  in a previous post quite some time back saying it's the sort of thing to hand over to farmers as they like them. Wink

I asked my new farm owner if he'd ever seen one or knew how they were used.  He said no he'd never heard of them .

Amazing being as they own the biggest dairy herd in Pembrokeshire. How times change.

For roughnecks info,    They pushed them onto the sharp end of the horn then screwed them tight then cut of the bit that stuck out the end. By the way they aren't made of lead, usually Iron, sometimes Brass.

I've got several now and I wouldn't scrap them.  Nearly forgot to say,  great selection of finds there Paul. Lovely button at the bottom.

Some nice finds there. Looking at those hammies and cut coins set me thinking. Did they cut them along a particular line, or just any old way? And those coins that they put a wrinkle in; was it to make them less easy to lose?  Undecided

Blimey, I've scrapped quite a few of them cow horn protectors. I thought they where some sort of gear lever knobs. What age would they be.

Not really sure how far back they were used wittsy but I think a modern version is still in use.

Amazingly while I was looking for a reference to age I found the following.  Note the date.

Must have been the 1st time the subject came up. It comes up like weeds, misses a couple of years then, there it is again. If you do a Google search for Cow Horn Protectors you'll get some pics one shows a cow 'wearing' them.
