I at first used a regular garden border spade. This didn't last too long Then a friend introduced me to a Draper mini digger. These are excellent, quite durable and do last for a long time. I am now on my second in 10 years. They are a bit short when you are bent over digging and have a bad back. However, with my back I have now taken to digging kneeling down so the length of the mini digger doesn't matter so much now.

I was a little worried that draper mini spade wouldn't last long  for hard ground digging. Is  the shaft hollow  fibreglass  as my last one was didn't last long  before it cracked.

I use a tree planting spade with a cut down shaft. This is a bit heavy but seriously strong. It will dig in ground that the mini spades bounce off.
