When this came out from under the stubble this morning, my first thoughts were immediately towards a hammered. 21 mm diameter and less than 1mm thick, it felt like a good quality Eddie penny. Then I saw the design, and it looked like reverse of other Romans that i have seen, that and the latin inscription now have me totally bamboozled. As handyman pointed out on the field, one side contains the Roman numerals IC & XC which are 99 and 90 respectively. As for any other information.... yes please Peter.

It's a Venetian Grosso, a much larger coin than a soldino.. I'll see if I can ID it more precisely.

Thanks for that guys. That explains why it felt like a hammie then; It is one  Grin

Now you've got me reading about the venetian coinage on the net and its use over here. Fascinating history we have, don't we.

Cheers,

I've just found out it's more interesting than that even. It's a dinar of Stefan Uros II Milutin (1282-1321), King of Serbia. Produced in deliberate imitation of the Venetian grosso. It's the second one down in this link:

Cracking coin - love the whole look of it.

Well found Techony and a great ID from the Doc.

You won't find many of them in your detecting life.
