Not a clue Kev but looks Roman or Bronze Age but that means it is probably a modern chest handle.  Grin

I agree with avalon (who should know what a Roman brooch looks like  Grin ). It's an incomplete trumpet brooch 1st to 2nd century AD. This one on PAS is in a similar condition:

thanks Peter & Avalon. Melonhead will be pleased he did say Saturday it could be one but we both said no more about it . he will be over the moon now with this i.d. hes off line at the mo computer troubles will ring him and tell him.thanks again both.

My thoughts were a brooch as soon as I saw it - but hey I'm no expert either!!  Best leave the def identifications to the expert anoraks  - we're lucky to have them  Smiley
