Hi Richard,

Like I said on the other thread, can you get a bigger/sharper/brighter picture. A better focused picture of the right half of the head side would be great.

I can't make out yet whether it's an Edward, Henry or Richard even  :o

Right - I think I've got it.

Can definitely see what looks like the bottom of ..ARDVS REX on the obverse.
.
Could be RICARDVS or EDWARDVS, but I believe it is most likely to be a third coinage halfpenny of Edward III, like this one:

http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/ukdfddata/showrecords.php?product=17292&cat=27 (http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/ukdfddata/showrecords.php?product=17292&cat=27)

Richard - can you measure the maximum diameter in millimetres for me please? If it is 14-15 mm then it's a halfpenny. If it's larger I'll have to think again!

I can see R I C. I have fiddled with the image a bit to try and show the bust more clearly. See what you think Peter.

I can see what you mean Eric and Richard, but I think you are misreading it. This is what it looks like to me (font and size are not quite right but you can see the idea).

Halfpennies of Richard III read RICARD DI GRA REX, so the lettering we can see does not match. Halfpennies of Richard II read RICARD REX ANGL, again not a match. Halfpennies of Edward IV read EDWARD DI GRA REX or EDWARD DEI GRA REX.

The only possible match is Edward III, where the typical legend is EDWARDVS REX or EDWARDVS REX ANG.

Did you manage to measure the size?

I think you can't always go on the style of the head with these. For example, have a look here - these are all third coinage halfpennies of Edward III, but look at how many different types of bust there are:

http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/ukdfddata/showcat.php?cat=27&stype=1&si=halfpenny+third&perpage=12&sort=1&stype=&limit=&cat=27&ppuser=0 (http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/ukdfddata/showcat.php?cat=27&stype=1&si=halfpenny+third&perpage=12&sort=1&stype=&limit=&cat=27&ppuser=0)

I suppose they were using old dies and some were being struck abroad, where the legend had to have different content to show the different kingdoms and shifting political picture of the times.

It amazes me that the coin using public even knew what they were using to buy their groceries and whether they were getting the right change from traders.

They must have spent hours every evening checking their coinage, just to check they had the right kings name. No wonder they clipped and deformed the coins,

Eric
