I always use the pound coins I find in shops - and have only been questioned once. When I explained where they were from they took them. If we had a bit investment in our coins or went back to a silver standard we wouldn't have this problem. I did read a few years ago that the Royal Mint was considering a £5 and £10 coin with silver content in them - what percentage I have no idea. The £5 note will be next to go into a permanent coin in my opinion. You never get new fivers now in your change - they are always bogging!
