Title: Before and after Cleaning Pictures
Post by: rjm on December 24, 2010, 06:06:09 PM

The attached pictures are of a copper George 111 Cartwheel Penny (1797) that I found about
15 years ago on a small farm near Abergavenny town centre.

It's been gathering dust, and due to having more time and because of the weather I thought
I'd start sorting out the many hundreds of various coins I've got.

I have only taken the coin back so far. It still retains some of the dirt to give it a bit of character.

I can't remember scratching it..............it was a long time ago. :-[

I soaked it in olive oil for a while, and then rubbed with a cloth. I applied a lashing of copper polish and rubbed
with a wire sponge, then tootbrush, before applying more polish and rubbing between a cloth.

I repeated the process until the details on front and back could be seen.

The coin was in a hell of a state and from my experience a barelling machine or sonic cleaning machine
wouldn't have achieved much.

At least now it has a nice tone and the details can be seen.

It's a shame about the spade mark but it doesn't happen much.  ;D
