Title: Ozzy Head Jo's silver today
Post by: farmer(phil) on October 02, 2010, 10:42:25 PM
Today's weather  seemed the most promising for this week end, so a quickly arranged meeting of our small group (Myself, Casa dos, Melonhead and Ozzy Head ) ventured to a new farm. After a quick look at the available land, we decided, for today, to detect away from the farm, and take the high ground near a disused quarry and derelict stone barn.

Besides the usual coppers found by all, my best find was a George iv 1d and barrel key, Kev found a Penny copper token and Sherpa Melonhead carried the food and Kevs deckchair.( Great person to have around ;))

But, Ozzy Head Jo  :-*put the Minelab boys to shame :'( by firstly finding a Vicky sixpence in the morning and then a silver brooch in the afternoon, besides a 1947 half crown  and barrel key. The brooch hallmarks show Birmingham mint, and I think 1888.   Nice finds Jo, well done ;)

Found a brooch similar pattern on the net.
Also made in Birmingham but in 1881....known as a mourning brooch...."the birds in flight symbolise the release of the soul and this swallow probably symbolises the passing of a child"
Intresting bit of info :o

The brooch was quite deep and when I caught a glimpse of it in the side of the hole I'd dug, it looked like a broken up can lid. I went to pull it out and realised it wasn't then I eased it out still in the earth with my shovel. The back has patterns on it also and I read that a lock of hair would have been placed in it. It was referred to as a hair locket backing.

Thanks for posting them Phil!
