Title: Which headphones?
Post by: JRD on September 07, 2010, 06:30:02 PM
Hi guys,

Can anyone recommend good headphones? i.e. ones that are comfortable to wear, do a decent job and don't cost a small fortune!

Also what is the importance of good headphones? Do great ones really make a difference?

Finally any recommendations where to shop online? i.e. anyone with particular good service, good prices etc? obviously it pays to shop around, and I have looked at quite a few online specialists as well as the old ebay - but just wondered where other people tend to shop?

thanks all,
Jonathan

Thanks Geoff - good points made.

I am, using a Garrett 250 at the moment, so not sure what would be suitable (but anything got to be better than the ones supplied with the 'tector!).

I will look at the Chef ones on the site you mentioned and way up cost amongst otherthings (as I am also needing a new mini shovel and wanting a Garrett pro pinpointer) so many new toys to buy!  :)

I would love to recommend the Chef phones -- bought a set for Mrs h and she has proceeded to outdo me with finds.

Am now seriously thinking of nicking her Chefphones.

Oh and as for lifetime guarantee ... its good. Mrs h had a slight problem with the lead at Ludlow and it was changed without any hassle whatsoever.

You'll soon be cooking with Chefphones!

My advice depends on how long you are going to keep the Ace 250, If it's for the ace then I would recommend getting the CP2 and if you were ever to upgrade your machine to a Fisher, T2, Whites or Xtera then you are still going to be OK, But if you are thinking that one day you will choose an Explorer, Etrac, Sovereign or XP then go for the CP1.

Thanks Chef - thats a good question about how long I will stay with the Ace 250. I have already been cooing over better machines but I don't think I am ready to upgrade yet - still need to earn my spurs with the Ace.

I like the look of the CP1 though - although a bit more than I was originally going to spend on headphones, But I am thinking get it right first time and then don't need to upgrade any time soon then  ;D

Mmmm! [ponders]

Ok took my new CP1's out the back for a test drive. Turned on the 'tector great sound coming through, no sound leakage, very nice I think.

So take them off to have another look at them and flicked the switch that I find on the side, also noticed I had them on the wrong way round  :P, try them again (right way!) - bloody hell sound took my head off! turned them down very quickly. Thought they were good before but when I flicked the switch the sound pickup is very strong - awesome!

Top set of headphones - cheers Chef and also all who recommended them.

I had a new set of Koss before I got my chefphones and I loved them , albeit they used to slide off my head everytime I bent down to dig. When I got the Chefphones, I was convinced there could not be that much difference between two pairs of decent headphones.................. How wrong I was.  The way Chef has my Etrac set up - in conjuction with the phones is awesome,  when I go over a hammered or any of the low range goodies the bloody phones literally vibrate.  The Etrac is a slow machine granted , but the phones really allow you to pick out  signals close together in the ground.

First time i put the Chef phones on I panicked as the amount of sound they block out is frightening. I had to whip them off quick to make sure I hadnt actually gone deaf  :o  ;)
