Title: A days detecting with Pipster
Post by: Chef Geoff on August 18, 2010, 07:12:57 PM
Pipster (Phil) kindly invited me over to gods country for a days detecting, so at 7am I was off and ready for whatever the day could throw at us. (and secretly hoping to show this new upstart that he cant just start finding hammereds when he wants to) ;D  The first (and only today) field soon unraveled it's story, the bottom half being quite quiet and sterile, had in years gone by been under water for much of the year, this made us concentrate on the higher ground which soon started to produce finds.
Both Phil and I eyed with expectation the next field which we planned to search in the afternoon, Unfortunately our plans and those of the farmer didn't quite match and as the sun moved across the heavens so a red tractor complete with muck spreader moved across the next field.
Sol looked gently on us and a great day was had by me and I hope Phil, who shot me down as he did my compadre Ray by producing an early short cross hammered penny, unfortunately it has no legend left visible but they all count.
My finds are pictured below, my only silver was a very worn Vicki sixpence but the most interesting (for me) is the large button top right which I first took to be a dandy button due to it's size, but on closer inspection it shows the Arms of the City of Bristol, It does have a legend and a makers name so some TLC may reveal just who wore it.

Thanks Phil and good luck with the next field (gloves and wellies required) :)

PS. the coin bottom row 3rd from left is a 1854 Napoleon III 10 centimes, you can see why they turn up so often as they could pass as a penny.
